To find the right enclosure for your needs, you need to figure out the physical size of your faulty hard drive (hard disk drives are often 2.5 - 3.5 inches wide, while SSDs are smaller and require special enclosures) and what connector it uses to communicate with your PC. These are external devices designed to let you slot a drive into them and read/extract the data on another PC via USB. If that doesn't work (or you don't have a second PC handy), consider investing in a USB hard drive enclosure. If you're able to successfully remove the drive, place it into another PC and see if you can access the drive to pull the data off that way. (Image credit: Photo by panumas nikhomkhai from Pexels)ģ. If there isn't, you'll need to take it to a qualified repair service or try and get it repaired by the manufacturer.Ĭloud backup services are valuable because they store your data in a remote server somewhere, so you can recover it even in the case of a catastrophic failure. Consult your laptop's manual or reach out to the manufacturer to see if there's an easy way to remove the drive from the laptop (many of the best Windows laptops are designed to make removing the storage drive or memory relatively straightforward, but not all). But last time I ran away."Ĭo-workers will pass on anecdotes, but in terms of processing feedback, Geppert sticks to reading reviews from critics-that's it. It's so weird for me to see somebody consuming the art you did in a real emotional way. I hear what others tell me how they reacted. "I have to be honest," she said, "I watched the testers back in the days because I needed to. Geppert then worked hand-in-hand with Bell to figure out how to rewrite and reconfigure. What was left was then handed to writer Stephen Bell, who contributed to indie darling What Remains of Edith Finch and has been a narrative consultant on a number of other games. In the end, roughly a third of the script was removed, words now deemed unnecessary. Specifically, she pointed to numerous instances where the game's main character, Kay, would explain what the player was seeing.while the player was looking directly at it. It is great but it could have been less." But when the game came out, many said "it's so on the nose, it's so much" and they were right! I hate it! No, no, no, no, no. "I don't want people to miss what I want to say. ![]() "So I sat there and thought about it and thought this is likely true," she said. "I remember I was talking to some journalists who talked badly about Sea of Solitude's script and everything, and they were always surprised when I was like, 'Yeah, I agree with you. The publisher was fine with whatever direction Geppert went in, but Geppert recalls agreeing with their analysis, resulting in a game script that was overly talkative, holding the player's hand. She recalled a meeting with Electronic Arts, in which the publisher said Sea of Solitude was, perhaps, in danger of being misunderstood by relying too much on subtleties and metaphors. ![]() The first thing that needed to change, in Geppert's mind, was the script. "The first console game, the first time I ever wrote a story. "When we made Sea of Solitude, it was so many firsts," said Geppert. She could rewrite the script, rework the story around it, employ professional voice actors (the original game used some in-house employees), and update the cutscenes. Quantic Dream's offer was to let Geppert take another pass at Sea of Solitude. Geppert explained how the game's publisher, Electronic Arts, has never really embraced Nintendo's machine, and so the option never came up. The two traded emails, and later, Fondaumière sent Geppert a note and asked why Sea of Solitude hadn't appeared on Switch. Except, she joked, "for the ending."įondaumière reportedly mentioned how several people at Quantic Dream enjoyed Sea of Solitude, and the two went back and forth before it was time to head back inside. Geppert said she's long been a fan of Quantic Dream's early game, Fahrenheit. But at Gamescom 2019, Geppert found herself smoking an e-cigarette outside of a hotel with Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière, and the two began chatting about shared admiration. For Sea of Solitude developer Jo-Mei Games, this was its first foray outside of free-to-play browser games, so of course such a hard pivot would have its issues. As with so much in this game, the symbolism is obvious - by enduring the painful process of shining a light on one’s monsters one can cause them to retreat. In most cases, that's that, and everyone looks towards the next game. The player can then guide that light toward the shadowy monster in the distance while Kay shrieks in agony. Pressing a button allows Kay to “connect” or merge with the airborne girl, and a golden light emerges. With the corruption gone the glowing light transforms into the supine image of a girl suspended in the air. Stepping closer to the muffled light, a button prompt appears on screen allowing Kay the chance to clear away the corruption by using her backpack as a veritable suction hose. Following her flares, she is led to a roof where she finds, suspended in the air, a golden light which is being encircled by “corruption” or what looks like feces. Piloting her boat away from the monster, Kay finds a dock. This one is another of Kay’s projections. Soon after passing through the gate Kay encounters the first of a small number of large monsters. When examining whether or not you should develop in native code, think about your requirements and see if the Android framework APIs provide the functionality that you need. Simply re-coding a method to run in C usually does not result in a large performance increase. Typical good candidates for the NDK are self-contained, CPU-intensive operations that don't allocate much memory, such as signal processing, physics simulation, and so on. In general, you should only use native code if it is essential to your application, not just because you prefer to program in C/C++. As a developer, you need to balance its benefits against its drawbacks notably, using native code does not result in an automatic performance increase, but always increases application complexity. The manifested features of the coronavirus pandemic force us to reconsider the existing ideas about herd immunity, a phenomenon, based on which medicine has always been able to build forecasts of the dynamics of pandemics and calculate costs and human losses. The prevailing views to this day about the almost complete understanding of the nature of viral infections and the technological readiness of mankind to confront epidemics can be shaken by the research results that have discovered unexpected properties of pandemics and new aspects of their interactions with humans and society. The top, the bottom, and the walls of the cylinder (the lateral surface area) determine the total surface area. So, the area of the rectangle is A = l x w = C x h = 2πr x h = 2πrh.įinally, if we put all the three surfaces together, we can arrive at the formula for the complete surface area of a cylinder. The dimensions of the rectangle are the circumference, C = 2πr, and the height of the cylinder, h. When the cylinder wall is completely open, we see that the circumference of the circle becomes the length of the final rectangle. The circumference has been marked in red. We know that the distance around a circle is called its circumference, C = 2πr. The top of the original cylinder is a circle. But we need to go back to the original cylinder for a moment before we calculate the rectangle's area. The surface being referred to is the curved wall of the cylinder. The third surface, the lateral surface area, is less easy to visualize for the purposes of calculating its area, especially since it does not appear to be in a shape that fits a known area like a triangle or parallelogram. So, the area of two circles would be πr 2 + πr 2 = 2πr 2. The top and bottom, which are circles, are easy to visualize.
