So all the character models from Metal Gear Solid are here – that means Snake will be in his sneaking suit with blurry pixel eyes and you’ll be fighting genome soldiers with white winter clothing. Reusing many assets from the original game, VR Missions is an accomplished PS1 title which won’t blow your socks off, but looks decent enough. Plus, Metal Gear Solid 2 actually incorporates VR Missions as a canon part of the plot (for reasons I won’t spoil here), which is a nice little way to include what would otherwise be a throwaway gameplay expansion into the main series arc. Released in Japan as a pack-in with the international version of Metal Gear Solid, it’s littered with references to its predecessor – all the sound effects, weapons and enemies you’ve seen before are here, plus you get praise for doing well from Naomi and can even unlock an extra mode where you take photos of Mei Ling. As you can guess, there’s a little of that skeevy Kojima fanservice in here that we’ve seen before, but nothing too overwhelming. VR Missions contains no plot and simply acts as a series of combat training scenarios for Solid Snake to undertake, presumably before he was due to set off on this perilous journey. The story of Metal Gear Solid is a twisting tale of betrayal and one soldier’s mission to stop the terrorist takeover of a nuclear decommissioning facility.
